Strong high pressure has shifted to a position off the east coast and the result will be an influx of summer-like air in the Mid-Atlantic region and temperatures climbing well up into the 80’s during the next few days. While there will be some sunshine in the near-term, it will be dimmed at times from haze being caused by Canadian wildfires up north and this will make for redder-than-normal sunrises and sunsets as well. Mount Etna erupted on Monday, surprising tourists and sending them fleeing to safety as huge plumes of ash and debris shot out of the volcano and into the sky, according to news reports. A pyroclastic flow, or avalanche of burning ash, crashed down the slopes of the volcano’s southeast crater, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Toulouse reported that the ash cloud had reached an estimated height of 21,000 feet. Despite the many videos of people fleeing down Mt. Etna during the eruption, no injuries or fatalities have resulted or been reported so far.

As we start the new work week, an upper-level ridge of high pressure builds across the southeastern states. As a result, low-level winds from a south-to-southwest direction will develop bringing warmer and more humid air into the region. The dry weather pattern will continue as well during the next few days with little to no rainfall expected in the Tennessee Valley.

As it gradually slides to the south and east, a warming trend will get underway and temperatures will climb from a chilly start to the day this morning to near 90 degrees for afternoon highs on Wednesday and Thursday. The weather becomes somewhat unsettled late in the week with a weak upper-level trough forming in the eastern states.
One final note, while not a record, the low temperature of 48 degrees on Sunday morning at Washington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA) was the first June day below 50 since the 49 degrees on June 1, 1984, and the lowest June temperature since 47 degrees occurred on June 11, 1972 (which happened to be the month that featured Tropical Storm Agnes).
