A cold front moved through the region on Tuesday and set the stage for clearing skies last night and plenty of sunshine here today. However, there is one “fly-in-the-ointment” with respect to the sunshine expected today, it will be dimmed by smoke and haze at times due to the post-frontal shift in the winds which are now blowing air into the Mid-Atlantic region from Canada. Another cold front heads this way at the end of the week and will likely stall-out in close proximity. As a result, several waves of low pressure could ride along the nearly stationary frontal boundary zone generating unsettled weather conditions here from late Friday through Monday with the chance of showers on each day.

An upper-level ridge of high pressure builds into the area for the mid-week, but then an upper low will shift northeast from the southern Plains during the late week. As a result, it should stay rain-free around here into Thursday morning, but then the chance of showers and thunderstorms will increase on Thursday afternoon and evening. More moisture is likely to push into the Tennessee Valley for the end of the week and weekend leading to an enhanced chance of rain and thunderstorms in the Friday-to-Monday time period.

The Northern Hemisphere saw its first hurricane of the season on Monday in the eastern Pacific Ocean, but overall, the 2025 tropical season is off to a relatively quiet start. In fact, there are reports that this is the latest time since 1993 for the first hurricane to develop in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Atlantic Basin, it is still quite early in the season and there has been no activity so far, but there is the possibility of a tropical system in about a week to ten days or so across the southwestern Gulf of America or northwestern Caribbean Sea.
