12:40 PM | *Any sun this afternoon will boost chances for strong-to-severe thunderstorms*

Paul Dorian

One of the keys to the generation of strong-to-severe thunderstorms later today in the I-95 corridor has to do with how much sunshine can poke through the current rather widespread band of low clouds and patchy fog.  If some brightening skies were to occur – and prospects are quite good – then this would help to generate some low-level heating which, in turn, would cause instability in the atmosphere.  In fact, the GOES visible satellite images from early morning-to-late morning show clearing skies are slowly advancing eastward across Pennsylvania and skies should brighten during the next few hours in areas to the north and west of the big cities along I-95.  As a result, odds do favor the formation of showers and thunderstorms later today in upstream interior locations of the Mid-Atlantic and some of the storms that develop can become quite strong with damaging wind gusts, heavy downpours, and even hail.  The most likely timetable for showers and thunderstorms to reach the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor is 4PM to as late as midnight as activity will tend to be slow to arrive and slow to leave.

7:00 AM | Still unsettled weather today from slow-moving cold front...scattered PM showers and thunderstorms

Paul Dorian

A slow-moving cold front will continue to threaten the Mid-Atlantic region with showers and thunderstorms later today, but it should finally push far enough off the coast on Wednesday to allow for high pressure to build back into the area and a couple of nice days.  Another frontal system will arrive by the weekend and it’ll likely result in unsettled weather conditions on Friday and Saturday.  All in all, however, the upcoming holiday weekend is looking pretty decent.

6:00 AM | Slow-moving cold front brings next shot at showers and thunderstorms

Paul Dorian

High pressure will move offshore today and a slow-moving cold front will approach from the northwest tonight and Tuesday.  With the approach of the slow-moving cold front, the chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase by late in the afternoon and that threat may continue right into tomorrow night.  The front should finally pass through by mid-week and temperatures will be quite comfortable later in the week.  In fact, there is still no extensive hot weather in sight for the Mid-Atlantic region as upper-level troughing will continue to dominate across the Northeast US and southeastern Canada preventing any sustained heat from building up around here.

7:00 AM | Another nice weekend on the way

Paul Dorian

While there can be another shower or thunderstorm as we close out the work week, high pressure will gradually build into the region later today and it’ll pave the way for another nice weekend in DC, Philly and NYC.  Temperatures this weekend will climb well up into the 80’s on each day and there should be plenty of sunshine.  A frontal system will approach the area early next week and it should bring about an increased chance for showers and thunderstorms by late Monday and Tuesday.  Looking ahead, there is still no extended heat wave in sight for the Mid-Atlantic region.

7:00 AM | Active weather today with rain and embedded thunderstorms...weekend looking nice

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will move eastward today across Pennsylvania and it is generating steady rainfall this morning with embedded thunderstorms and some of the rain is heavy at times. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and some of the storms can reach strong levels.  All of the activity dies down on Friday as high pressure pushes into the region and the weekend is looking quite nice for the I-95 corridor.

12:30 PM | *More active weather arrives late tonight and continues into Thursday with heavy rain and strong thunderstorms on the table; especially, south of the PA/MD border*

Paul Dorian

The overall weather pattern will remain quite active in the I-95 corridor over the next 24 hours and it could result in some heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorm activity; especially, to the south of the PA/MD border. This will not be the conventional “late afternoon/early evening” timetable for the strong thunderstorms threat, but the main action will likely take place between late tonight and mid-day on Thursday although there can be some lingering activity later tomorrow afternoon. Looking ahead, high pressure will build back into the region on Friday and the weekend is looking quite nice from DC-to-Philly-to-NYC.

7:00 AM | More rain and thunderstorms coming tomorrow after today's break in the action

Paul Dorian

A cold front pushed through the region late yesterday and building high pressure will assure nice weather today with plenty of sunshine, comfortable temperatures and lowering humidity levels. Unfortunately, the high will quickly depart and low pressure with its associated frontal system will head our way on Thursday from the Ohio Valley bringing rain and thunderstorms to the Mid-Atlantic region.  Some of the rain on Thursday can be heavy and some of the thunderstorms can reach strong-to-severe levels.  The good news is that high pressure will return at the end of the week and we should enjoy another nice weekend in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor.

12:00 PM | *Severe weather threat this afternoon in parts of the Mid-Atlantic and again on Thursday*

Paul Dorian

An active weather pattern over the next few days will bring two shots of strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity to the Mid-Atlantic region with damaging wind gusts, hail and even isolated tornadoes on the table.  The first shot comes this afternoon and early evening primarily to the southern half of the Mid-Atlantic with the DC and Baltimore metro regions especially vulnerable as a cold front arrives from the northwest. A second opportunity will come on Thursday and this one looks even more impressive and is likely to be more widespread as a vigorous low pressure system and its associated cold front heads to the local area from the Ohio Valley. The good news is that all of this activity will quiet down at the end of the week as high pressure builds into the Mid-Atlantic and it looks like we are in store for another nice weekend.

7:00 AM | Scattered showers and thunderstorms later today as cold front arrives...another rain threat on Thursday

Paul Dorian

A cold front arrives in the Mid-Atlantic region later today with scattered showers and thunderstorms and some of the thunderstorms can be on the strong-to-severe side.  High pressure will then briefly regain control on Wednesday, but low pressure from the Upper Midwest will quickly follow on its heels on Thursday bringing with it occasional rain and possible thunderstorms.  Some of the rain on Thursday can be heavy and some of the storms can be on the strong-to-severe side.  Looking ahead, it looks nice for Friday and the weekend as high pressure  returns to the region.

7:00 AM | Thursday is likely the rainiest day of the week

Paul Dorian

High pressure across the Northeast US provided us with nice weather for the weekend and it’ll hold on for another day as we begin the new work week.  By late tonight, a trough of low pressure will swing through the area with an isolated shower and thunderstorm and then a cold front arrives late tomorrow with scattered showers and thunderstorms.  High pressure briefly regains control on Wednesday, but then low pressure will push in from the Ohio Valley on Thursday bringing with it occasional rain and possible thunderstorms.  High pressure then returns for the end of the week and weekend.
