7:00 AM | ***Very cold air mass for Friday and Saturday...Friday night lows in the low-to-mid teens with much lower wind chills***

Paul Dorian

After the threat of snow early today, high pressure will take back control of the weather by afternoon and clearing skies will develop in the Mid-Atlantic region. After a moderately cold day on Thursday, an Arctic front will head in this direction and blast through early Friday morning. This frontal passage will usher in a very cold air mass for both Friday and Saturday with late night lows in the lower teens along with much lower wind chill values.

2:30 PM | ***Some snow late tonight/early Wednesday in DC, Philly and NYC from system now producing severe icing in Arkansas/Texas…short-lived, but brutally cold Arctic air mass headed to the NE US***

Paul Dorian

It won’t be a big deal, but compared to the snow (or lack thereof) so far this winter season, the coating to an inch or so of snow that can fall late tonight/early Wednesday in the DC-Philly-to-NYC corridor may seem like quite a bit.  Low pressure that is now creating significant icing problems across Arkansas and Texas will move along a stalled-out frontal boundary zone and it should make it far enough to the north to produce some snow in the Mid-Atlantic region from later tonight into early Wednesday.  After a moderately cold day on Thursday, an Arctic front will blast through the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US by early Friday and this frontal passage will usher in a brutally cold air mass for Friday and Saturday.  In fact, single digit lows are likely on Friday night all the way down to the Philly metro region and zero degrees is on the table for New York City. In addition, wind chills will cause some pain in this short-lived, but very impressive Arctic blast.

7:00 AM | ***Chance of snow late tonight/early Wednesday...a two-day shot of some very cold Arctic air at week's end***

Paul Dorian

Colder air will push into the region today following the passage of a slow-moving frontal system that will then stall out just to the south of here. A wave of low pressure will push along the stalled-out frontal boundary zone later tonight and it could produce a wintry mix in the evening and then some snow late tonight and early Wednesday. After a moderately cold day on Thursday, a strong Arctic front will blast through here on Friday morning and it’ll usher in two-day shot of some very cold air with painful wind chills and lows in the low-to-mid teens by early Saturday.

7:00 AM | **Turns colder this week...even very cold from Friday into Saturday...chance for rain, ice and/or snow on Tuesday/Tuesday night and perhaps another shot later in the week**

Paul Dorian

There is a slight chance for rain, ice and/or snow tomorrow and tomorrow night and maybe a second chance later in the week, but perhaps the biggest story of the week will be the change to cold. In fact, there is a good chance for some very cold conditions here from Friday into Saturday with the lower teens on the table later Friday night. A cold front will slowly works its way through the region today and then stalls out just to the south of here.  A series of low pressure systems will ride along the frontal-boundary zone at the same time colder air seeps in from the northwest.

7:00 AM | *High pressure in control as we head into the weekend*

Paul Dorian

High pressure has pushed into the northeastern part of the nation and will control our weather into the weekend.  A cold front heads our way later Sunday and it can bring some rain to the region.  This front stalls out to our south next week and a series of low pressures may ride along the frontal boundary zone bringing us the chance for rain, ice and/or snow.

7:00 AM | **Becoming quite windy today on the back side of departing low pressure**

Paul Dorian

The storm that impacted the Mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday continues to intensify as it moves northeastward towards the Canadian Maritime provinces. The pressure gradient between the departing low and an incoming high pressure system will tighten today and the result here can be gusts of up to 40 mph or so.   High pressure will then take control for the end of the week and upcoming weekend with a continuation of moderately chilly conditions.

7:00 AM | **Rain arrives mid-to-late morning...possibly as a wintry mix for a brief time in some of the far northern and western suburbs**

Paul Dorian

Rain is likely to break out here during the mid-to-late morning hours with the next approaching storm system and there can be a wintry mix for a brief time at the onset in some of the far northern and western suburbs.  Little to no snow accumulations are expected.  Some of the rain later today and early tonight can fall heavily at times.  On the back side of the storm, NW winds will increase noticeably on Thursday with gusts possible to 50 mph, and it’ll be a moderately chilly day with high pressure headed this way.

10:50 AM | ***Some snow is possible at the onset on Wednesday north of PA/MD border, but it turns into a rain event...some of the rain can get heavy...some amazing cold in China, Russia***

Paul Dorian

A significant winter storm is developing today over Texas and this moisture-laden system will push northeastward over the next 24 hours bringing significant snowfall all the way from Texas to the Midwest.  In the Mid-Atlantic region, snow is likely to break out on Wednesday morning in areas to the north of the PA/MD border and there can be some minor accumulations before a changeover to rain later today as milder air surges northward along the coast.

Looking ahead, widespread colder-than-normal air is going to push into the northern and western US early next week and it’ll likely spread into the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US by late next week.  Whether or not this change to colder-than-normal conditions is sustained in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US after next week will largely depend on the stubborn high pressure ridge aloft over the southwestern Atlantic/Southeast US. Elsewhere, there has been some amazing cold on the other side of the North Pole with the lowest temperature ever recorded in China on Monday and this follows some tremendous cold last week in Russia (Siberia). This frigid air is now spreading to the Korean Peninsula and on the way to Japan where there can also be some all-time low temperatures.

7:00 AM | **Next storm arrives on Wednesday...snow or a wintry mix possible at the onset for a brief time in some of the far northern and western suburbs before a changeover to rain**

Paul Dorian

The active weather pattern will bring us another storm system to deal with on Wednesday and this one may feature some snow or a wintry mix at the onset.  Low pressure will develop today over Texas and abundant moisture will feed into the system from the Gulf of Mexico.  On Wednesday, this surface low pressure system will push northeastward with its large moisture field advancing to the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Another key player in the upcoming mid-week event will be strong high pressure that forms over southeastern Canada. This high will anchor an air mass that will be cold enough for widespread accumulating snow across the Midwest, interior Mid-Atlantic and much of the Northeast US. In the local area, there can be a brief period of snow or a wintry mix at the onset in some of the far northern and western suburbs before a changeover to rain takes place in all areas.

10:45 AM | ***Active pattern brings next storm to the Mid-Atlantic region at mid-week…accumulating snow at the onset in parts of the area***

Paul Dorian

As one storm continues to impact the Mid-Atlantic region with lingering rain and snow, the seeds for the next system are rolling through the southwestern states in the form of a vigorous upper-level low. This feature will drift into Texas on Tuesday and help generate surface low pressure and abundant moisture will feed into the system from the Gulf of Mexico.  On Wednesday, this surface low pressure system will push northeastward with its large moisture field advancing to the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Another key player in the upcoming mid-week event will be strong high pressure that forms over southeastern Canada. This system will anchor an air mass that will be cold enough for widespread accumulating snow across the Midwest, interior Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US. There is likely to even be some accumulating snow at the onset in portions of the I-95 corridor of the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday before the precipitation ultimately changes to plain rain.
