7:00 AM | *Morning showers and storms to pull away...a real taste of summer during the second half of the week*

Paul Dorian

Showers and thunderstorms associated with a warm frontal passage will pull away later this morning and the afternoon promises to become quite warm and humid with partial sunshine. The second half of the week will feature the first extended stretch of summer weather so far this year in the Mid-Atlantic region with high temperatures near 90 degrees on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A couple of weak disturbances this weekend could bring a return of showers and thunderstorms to the Mid-Atlantic region and it should turn slightly cooler early next week.

7:00 AM | *Turns much more summer-like this week*

Paul Dorian

The first stretch of summer-like weather is coming our way this week and highs during the second half of the week will approach the 90 degrees on a daily basis. High pressure will push offshore today and lose control of our weather after providing a very nice weekend in the Mid-Atlantic region. A warm front will lift through the region late tonight and likely produce showers and thunderstorms from late tonight into Tuesday and some of the rain can be heavy at times. High pressure will build back into the area at mid-week and it’ll turn summer-like for the second half of the week.

7:00 AM | *Morning showers as front slides through...becoming windy later today with lowering humidity setting the stage for a decent weekend*

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front is passing through the region early today with clouds and lingering showers, but it’ll pave the way for a nice break in the action from the recent very wet weather pattern here in the Mid-Atlantic. Winds will increase noticeably from a northwesterly direction and the humidity will drop sharply later today compared to recent days. High pressure building over southeastern Canada should be strong enough and close enough to produce decent weather around here through much of the upcoming weekend. More showers and thunderstorms will likely return to the Mid-Atlantic region on Monday and Tuesday and temperatures will climb well into the 80's.

7:00 AM | **Strong-to-severe thunderstorm threat later today/early tonight and then a break in the action**

Paul Dorian

An unusually strong low pressure system for the 20th of June will move towards northwestern Pennsylvania by later today and a strong surface cold front will slide towards the east coast. At the same time, a powerful wave of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere will move over the Mid-Atlantic region. As a result, there can be an outbreak of severe thunderstorms from later this afternoon into early tonight that could impact the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Once the strong cold front clears the coast by early tomorrow, the threat for rain will wind down, humidity will drop, and the winds will pick up noticeably from a northwesterly direction gusting to 30 mph at times. High pressure will build into the area later tomorrow and it may just stay in control for most of the upcoming weekend, but more showers are possible around here by Sunday night or Monday.

7:00 AM | *More showers likely today and a possible thunderstorm...strong-to-severe thunderstorm threat for late tomorrow/early tomorrow night*

Paul Dorian

A nearly stationary frontal system draped across the Mid-Atlantic region will continue to act as a focal point for showers and thunderstorms today and some of the rain can be heavy at times. Given the already well-saturated grounds, any heavy rainfall can result in localized flooding conditions. Ingredients may be coming together for a severe weather outbreak in the I-95 corridor later tomorrow and tomorrow night. An unusually strong low pressure system will move over the western part of the Mid-Atlantic later tomorrow and a strong surface cold front will slide towards the east coast. At the same time, a powerful wave of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere will move over the Mid-Atlantic region. As a result, there can be an outbreak of severe thunderstorms late on Thursday that could impact the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Once the strong cold front clears the coast by early Friday, the threat for rain will end, humidity will drop, and the winds will pick up noticeably from a northwesterly direction. High pressure is likely to take control for much of the weekend, but more rain is possible here by early next week.

11:45 AM (Tuesday) | **Threat continues today for downpours and strong-to-severe thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region…severe weather threat along the I-95 corridor late Thursday as well**

Paul Dorian

A nearly stationary frontal boundary zone is combining today with tropical-like humidity and upper-level energy to generate more showers and thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region and this threat for rain will continue tonight and Wednesday as well.  Some of the rain that falls will be heavy and some of the storms that form later today will reach strong-to-severe levels potentially resulting in damaging wind gusts and even isolated tornadoes.  Given the already well-saturated grounds, any heavy rain can quickly produce localized flooding conditions with a couple of inches possible in a short period of time.  Later in the week, the combination of a strong surface low pressure system and associated cold front with powerful energy aloft will likely result in a severe weather outbreak in the I-95 corridor from later Thursday into Thursday night before a break in the action arrives for Friday and Saturday.

7:00 AM | **Wet pattern continues here with heavy showers likely today and possible strong thunderstorms**

Paul Dorian

The threat exists here today for heavy showers and possible strong-to-severe thunderstorms. A nearly stationary frontal system draped across the Mid-Atlantic region will continue to act as a triggering mechanism for showers and thunderstorms and some of the rain that falls will be heavy at times. Given the already well-saturated grounds, any heavy rainfall can quickly result in localized flooding conditions and some spots could receive a couple inches of rain in a short time. A strong front may finally push through the region later Thursday night/early Friday and this could pave the way for a break in the action for later Friday and the upcoming weekend. That frontal passage, however, may come with the threat for severe weather late Thursday into Thursday night before windy and drier conditions arrive here on Friday.

7:00 AM | *Wet pattern continues this week with several chances of showers and thunderstorms*

Paul Dorian

A cold front pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region late yesterday and it looks like it will have an impact around here for much of the week as it stalls out. A series of waves of energy will move along the nearly stationary frontal boundary zone and generate bands of showers and thunderstorms for the next several days, some of the storms can be strong. Any of these showers or thunderstorms can produce heavy downpours and. given the well saturated grounds, localized flooding may become an increasing concern.

7:00 AM | *Another stretch of unsettled weather begins on Sunday and continues through much of next week*

Paul Dorian

The pressure gradient between a low pressure system to our north and high pressure to our south will tighten today and this will lead to increasingly strong winds gusting to 35 mph at times. The high pressure to our south will maintain control of the weather on Saturday as it shifts offshore, but then a frontal system will close in on the area during the latter stages of the weekend. This front will stall out in or near the region setting the stage for a stormy period from Sunday to Thursday that will feature warm and humid conditions as well.

7:00 AM | *Low pressure pushes along the east coast with rain and then cold front approaches late in the day*

Paul Dorian

Low pressure that is generating rain in the region will push north of here later this morning, but that will not be the end of the threat for rain. A cold front approaches the region later today and will cause scattered PM showers and thunderstorms. Any rain this morning associated with the low pressure system can be heavy at times and the same goes for any late day showers and thunderstorms associated with the cold frontal passage. High pressure builds into the area on Friday and it’ll combine with low pressure to the north to produce strong winds on Friday to go along with cooler-than-normal temperatures and comfortable humidity levels. The high shifts off the coast on Saturday and this will allow more moisture to push in this direction for the early part of next week. The threat for showers and thunderstorms that will return on Sunday will stick around on Monday and Tuesday in the Mid-Atlantic region.
