A back door cold front passed through Boston early yesterday in a northeast-to-southwest direction and dropped temperatures dramatically in a short period of time. This same system slid through our area last night and this will result in much relief here today in the temperature department. Temperatures on Tuesday climbed into the 90’s; however, will likely be confined to the middle 70’s today for highs. The atmosphere will become unsettled later today and tonight and this can result in some strong thunderstorm activity and heavy rainfall. Another front approaches later tomorrow bringing with it a renewed threat of showers and thunderstorms. High pressure will build into the region for the weekend likely leading to a comfortably warm few days in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Hot weather dominated the scene today across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US and one of the ways to get relief is from a “conventional” cool frontal system that passes from west-to-east. However, long-time residents of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US know that one other way to get a break in the heat is for a back door cool front to slide from northwest-to-southwest which can produce dramatic temperature changes in a short period of time. A hot day begins the holiday-shortened week in the Mid-Atlantic region with high temperatures this afternoon up in the low-to-mid 90’s. A cold front approaches the region later tomorrow bringing with it a chance of showers and thunderstorms. This front will tend to stall out by Thursday and an area of low pressure will ride along the boundary zone likely resulting in additional shower and thunderstorm activity. High pressure is likely to take control of the weather as we get to the weekend which may turn out to be quite nice with comfortably warm temperatures.

The combination of an increasingly humid air mass, strong surface frontal system and a vigorous mid-level low will help to generate numerous showers in the Mid-Atlantic region from today into tonight and possible severe thunderstorms. In fact, there may be two bands of thunderstorms to closely monitor during this event- one during the mid-day/early afternoon hours and a second during the late evening. The main severe weather parameter threats will be damaging wind gusts and “flash-flooding” downpours., and isolated tornadoes are also on the table. High pressure will continue to produce a low-level flow of air today out of the east and this will keep a cap on temperatures despite the return of some sunshine. It’ll turn warmer and more humid by late in the work week ahead of the next cold front and that system is likely to bring us another round of showers and thunderstorms…some of those storms later Friday can be on the strong side. The upper-level system associated with the cold front will linger for awhile this weekend and showers will remain a threat on Sunday. Conditions should improve on Sunday and then Monday, Memorial Day, is likely to turn out mainly sunny and quite warm with highs in the 80’s.

Low pressure will pull away from the region this morning, but the day will still feature plenty of clouds and temperatures a bit below-normal for late May. In fact, it stays a bit on the cool side of normal for the next few days with an easterly flow of air putting a cap on temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region. It does turn warmer on Friday ahead of the next cold front which could bring with it another round of showers and strong thunderstorms at the end of the work week. There is a chance that the late week frontal passage paves the way for the bulk of the Memorial Day weekend to feature decent weather, but still a few questions have to be ironed out.

A much different air mass has pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a strong cold front late yesterday that included some strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity. Today will be cooler and noticeably less humid than yesterday and the overall cool pattern will last through the week. Low pressure to our south will approach the area tonight and showers are possible on Monday night and can’t be ruled out into mid-week. Another strong cold front will impact the region by the end of the work week leading into the Memorial Day weekend.
