12:10 PM | *”Hit or Miss” showers and thunderstorms in recent weeks frustrating those north of the PA/MD border…lawns turning brown in some areas…additional rain chances coming…but no guarantees*

Paul Dorian

There have been many frontal passages in recent weeks across the Mid-Atlantic region that have produced showers and thunderstorms and, in some cases, severe weather. While these showers and thunderstorms have often been quite “numerous” to the south of the PA/MD border, they have usually been “isolated-to-scattered” across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York City. These “hit or miss” variety showers and thunderstorms are frustrating many residents to the north of the PA/MD border with lawns now beginning to turn brown in many areas. There will be additional chances of showers and thunderstorms in coming days, but still no guarantees; especially, to those north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

7:00 AM | *More comfortable conditions today following frontal passage...another comfortable air mass coming for the weekend*

Paul Dorian

Temperatures will be more comfortable today at seasonal levels with highs this afternoon confined to the lower or middle 80’s in the NYC metro region (normal high now at Central Park is 85 degrees). Given the general west-to-east air flow in the upper part of the atmosphere, the front that came through last night will have difficulty pushing too far to the south and east over the next 24 hours or so and is likely to stall out in the southern Mid-Atlantic region. As such, unsettled weather will return here for the mid and latter parts of the work with additional chances for showers and thunderstorms to go along with overall rather seasonal temperatures. Another cool front will head this way late in the week and all signs point to this next one having more “push” behind it and a comfortable air mass is likely to follow its passage for the upcoming weekend.

10:00 AM | *Heat wave to break today with arrival of front…more comfortable conditions on Tuesday...another comfortable air mass is coming for the upcoming weekend…a recap of the weekend temperatures*

Paul Dorian

The first extended heat wave of the summer in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US will break today with the arrival of a frontal system that is currently producing showers and embedded thunderstorms in upstate Pennsylvania. The chance of showers will increase in the I-95 corridor by the early-to-mid afternoon and while not every location will get hit, a strong-to-severe thunderstorm is possible right into the late evening hours. Much more comfortable conditions will take place on Tuesday with below-normal temperatures and another cooler-than-normal air mass is destined to come this way for the upcoming weekend. The past weekend featured some excessive heat in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor with a run to the 100 degree mark on both days.

7:00 AM | **Heat wave breaks today with arrival of frontal system...strong-to-severe thunderstorms are possible...much more comfortable temperatures on Tuesday**

Paul Dorian

The first extended heat wave of the summer in the Mid-Atlantic region will break today with the arrival of a frontal system that will generate showers and perhaps a strong-to-severe thunderstorm or two. It’ll remain pretty hot today though not as excessive as the past weekend and it’ll continue to be very humid and quite breezy. Much more comfortable air will arrive in the region by tomorrow with temperatures likely confined to the low-to-mid 80’s for highs on Tuesday afternoon…actually below-normal for this time of year. The front stalls out nearby on Tuesday and its proximity for the remainder of the week will keep it quite unsettled here to go along with seasonal temperatures. One final note, the high temperatures for Saturday and Sunday in the I-95 corridor were as follows: Philly: 98/99 degrees, DCA: 96/94 degrees, Central Park (NYC): 95/95 degrees and LaGuardia Apt. (NYC): 97/98 degrees.

7:00 AM | ***Heat wave continues right through the weekend with a run to 100 degrees possible on both days***

Paul Dorian

It’ll remain hot today in the Mid-Atlantic region, but overall humidity levels should be somewhat reduced compared to yesterday’s high values following the passage of a weak cool front (more like a “dew point” front and not a “temperature” front). The weekend will feature high heat and humidity with temperatures climbing well into the 90’s on both days and a surge to near 100 degrees is not out of the question in some spots. The next cool frontal system should bring some shower and thunderstorm activity to the region on Monday and its ultimate passage will bring us relief in the temperature department for Tuesday and Wednesday.

10:00 AM | **First extended heat wave of the summer in the Mid-Atlantic region lasts through Sunday…a run to 100 degrees on the table in some spots this weekend**

Paul Dorian

The Mid-Atlantic region has enjoyed a relatively normal summer so far with respect to overall temperatures featuring close-to-normal readings in the month of June and also for the first few weeks of July. We are now, however, in an extended stretch of hot and humid weather that will last right through the upcoming weekend and it looks like the heat will peak this weekend. In fact, high temperatures on Sunday afternoon could flirt with the 100 degree mark in some spots ahead of a cool front that should bring some relief by Tuesday and Wednesday.

7:00 AM | ***Scattered strong storms today...high heat to last right through the upcoming weekend***

Paul Dorian

The first extended heat wave of the season in the Mid-Atlantic region will continue through Sunday. Temperatures today will climb well into the 90’s and the humidity will be quite oppressive. A weak frontal system will generate scattered mid-day and afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Any thunderstorm that forms can be on the strong side. It remains hot on Friday, but the humidity should be down some compared to today’s very uncomfortable levels. The heat is likely peak this weekend with high temperatures on Sunday afternoon possibly flirting with the 100 degree mark. Another front will enhance chances for rain late Sunday and especially on Monday and its ultimate passage will bring us some relief in the temperature department for Tuesday and Wednesday.

7:00 AM | **Hot and humid weather next several days...heat to peak this weekend**

Paul Dorian

Temperatures should climb to or slightly above the 90 degree mark later today and it looks like the heat and humidity will last right through the upcoming weekend. In fact, the heat is likely to peak this weekend in the Mid-Atlantic region with highs here on Sunday afternoon potentially in the mid or upper 90’s. The nights will not offer much in the way of relief through this stretch as temperatures may only drop to the mid and upper 70’s in parts of the metro region. A weak frontal system will enhance chances slightly for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and then another front could renew the threat of rain late Sunday and/or Monday. Looking ahead, relief is likely to reach us early next week following the passage of a cool frontal system.

7:00 AM | **Heat and humidity for the second half of the work week and likely right through the upcoming weekend**

Paul Dorian

After an active day on Monday with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region, today should turn out to be rain-free and a little less humid than yesterday. It appears that the worst stretch of heat and humidity will makes its way into the Mid-Atlantic region for the second half of the work week and likely right through the weekend as well. We’re likely not talking about record highs with this hot spell, but the nights will offer little respite as overnight lows on Wednesday and Thursday nights, for example, will hold in the mid and upper 70’s in many spots. A weak frontal system could enhance chances for showers and thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon and then another front could renew the threat of rain on Sunday.

1:00 PM | ***Showers/strong-to-severe storms likely later today/early tonight in the Mid-Atlantic…can result in localized flooding…worst stretch of heat/humidity so far for the mid and late week***

Paul Dorian

The combination of a very humid air mass and an impulse in the upper atmosphere drifting in this direction will likely result in numerous afternoon and evening showers and strong-to-severe thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region. Given the high moisture levels and the ”lift” in the atmosphere that is expected later today, any PM shower or thunderstorm can dump a lot of rainfall in a short period of time with localized flooding a possibility. After a calmer day on Tuesday, the mid and late week will feature the worst stretch of heat and humidity so far this summer with afternoon highs in the low-to-mid 90’s along the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor.
