Philly and DC have not seen 90 degrees yet this month, but that is about to change in a big way. It’ll turn very warm on Thursday and Friday and 90 degree highs are certainly on the table, but the real heat comes next week. In fact, there is a chance for an extended period of 90+ degrees beginning next Monday which will follow what should be a pretty decent Father’s Day weekend. The nice weekend weather will be set up by the passage of a cool front on Friday night that can spark some strong-to-severe thunderstorm activity.

High pressure remains in control today and there will be plenty of sunshine and comfortably warm conditions. It turns warmer on Thursday and then temperatures should reach 90 degrees on Friday to close out the work week. There is a cold front headed this way for Friday night and it could produce a few strong-to-severe thunderstorms in the area late in the day or at night. The passage of the front is likely to set us up for a nice Father’s Day weekend with highs on both days in the 80’s…hot next week.

An upper-level low will swing across the northern Mid-Atlantic region today and it will cause some instability in the atmosphere and perhaps a few scattered PM showers and thunderstorms. Later in the week, an upper-level ridge will edge eastward and temperatures are likely to climb to 90 degrees on Thursday and Friday. A cold front will slide through the region on Friday night – perhaps sparking a few PM showers and thunderstorms – and temperatures will drop a bit this weekend with highs likely in the low-to-mid 80’s on both days.

A weak disturbance can set off some shower and thunderstorm activity later today as temperatures climb into the middle 80’s for afternoon highs. High pressure will be in general control of the weather on Tuesday providing us with plenty of sunshine and comfortably warm conditions. High pressure pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region on Thursday, and it’ll stay in control of the weather through Saturday as it edges slowly eastward towards the east coast. The air mass associated with this system is very comfortable for the end of May featuring pleasant temperatures and low humidity values. The pattern becomes more unsettled for the second half of the weekend as an upper-level trough will slide in this direction from the west. As a result, clouds should be on the increase on Sunday and there is a chance for some shower activity from Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

A spurt of tornadoes since late April has put levels well above normal as we reach the end of May and the overall active weather pattern of recent weeks looks like it’ll continue into the month of June. One of the key ingredients to this on-going active weather pattern has been the steady influx of colder-than-normal air masses from Canada into the US at the same time increasingly warm and humid air has been flowing northward from the Gulf of Mexico. The main area of concern for severe weather and tornadoes over the next few days will be across the Plains states all the way from Texas (today/tonight/tomorrow) to the Dakotas/Minnesota (on Sunday).

High pressure has edged into the Mid-Atlantic region and it arrives with a spectacular air mass for late May featuring very comfortable temperatures and humidity levels. There will be plenty of sunshine today to go along with the pleasant temperatures and low humidity and it stays nice on Friday as well. The weekend looks like it will start off well with plenty of sunshine expected on Saturday to go along with comfortably warm temperatures. The second half of the weekend is likely to feature increasing clouds as a disturbance heads this way from the Midwest and there is the chance of showers late in the day or on Sunday night.

Low pressure will push towards the region later today and the chance of showers and thunderstorms will be on the increase this afternoon and that threat will continue through much of tonight…any thunderstorm can be on the strong side. High pressure arrives on Thursday with plenty of sunshine and lowering humidity values, but an isolated shower or two cannot be ruled out. Temperatures will be quite comfortable for the next few days with the mid-to-upper 70’s for highs this afternoon and the middle 70’s on Thursday and Friday. A warming trend takes place this weekend and high temperatures by Sunday and Monday will be back near the 80 degree mark.
