A large low pressure system that has been plaguing us for the past few days will slowly push away from the Northeast US and the weather in the Mid-Atlantic region will slowly improve during the next few days. It remains breezy and chilly today with the chance for a few showers, but likely dry and cool on Saturday, and then dry and milder on Sunday with plenty of sun to close out the weekend. High pressure will be in general control of the weather here during the early part of next week and the warming trend will continue.

Any heavier shower or thunderstorm later today can generate small hail (ice pellets) or graupel (snow pellets) due to a cold upper atmosphere. In August of 2017 America went crazy for the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse on US soil since 1918 and it provided a great opportunity for scientists and all sky watchers. What was referred to as “The Great American Solar Eclipse” took place on August 21st, 2017 when the moon passed between the sun and earth. Total solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth every year or so, but generally cast their shadows over oceans or remote land masses. If you missed the 2017 total solar eclipse or it turned out to be cloudy in your particular area then there will be another opportunity on Monday, April 8th. This time the Moon's dark shadow, about 115 miles wide, will cross Mexico, sweep northeast from Texas to Maine, and then darken the Canadian Maritimes.

There has been rain, heavy at times, during the past couple of days and there will be rain, heavy at times, during the next couple of days…watch out for localized flooding. There are a couple of differences, however, in overall atmospheric conditions that will have an impact today, tonight and tomorrow. First, the overall atmosphere becomes some what more unstable later today leading to an increasing wind compared to earlier in the week and an also an increased chance for a strong thunderstorm. In addition, the overall atmosphere will become colder later today and tonight and this will allow for an increased chance of hail (ice pellets) or graupel (snow pellets) during any heavier shower or thunderstorm right through tomorrow.
