6:15 AM | *Cool end to the week...comfortable Saturday...slightly cooler Sunday and Monday...dry streak survives for another day at PHL*

Paul Dorian

A cold front crossed the region early yesterday and it’ll remain on the cool side as we end the work week with high pressure in control. The weekend should start off with sunshine and comfortable temperatures and there will be another cold front crossing the region on Saturday morning. The passage of the cold front will usher in slightly cooler air for Sunday and Monday and temperatures late Sunday night/early Monday should bottom out in the low-to-mid 30’s.

One final note, there was some light rain at Philly International Airport (PHL) early Thursday morning, but the official measurement was only a trace. As a result, the consecutive day streak without measurable precipitation (0.01 inches or more) continues into today and has now reached 26 days. The record streak of 29 days without measurable precipitation was set all the way back in 1874 and it is in jeopardy.

"2024-2025 Winter Outlook" by Arcfield Weather

Paul Dorian

Last winter was generally warmer-than-normal in the Mid-Atlantic region with below-normal snowfall and 2024 began with a rather strong El Nino event in the tropical Pacific Ocean. However, those warmer-than-normal water temperatures have since flipped to below-normal and this upcoming winter season is quite likely to feature weak La Nina (colder-than-normal) conditions. Typically, La Nina winters feature a more active polar jet stream that helps to transport cold air masses from northwestern Canada into the Northern Plains while, at the same time, much of the southern US often experiences warmer and drier conditions. La Nina winters are somewhat random in the Mid-Atlantic region with respect to temperatures and precipitation with some years featuring more snow than normal and others less.

*World Series games in recent history in which weather played an important role*

Paul Dorian

The World Series begins on Friday night, October 25th, in Los Angeles, California between the LA Dodgers and the New York Yankees. The weather will likely not be much of a factor for Games 1 and 2 with dry and warm conditions expected in southern California and daytime highs not far from 80 degrees. The World Series could end as late as November 2nd this year if all seven games are required to determine a champion.  With the extra playoff round added a few years ago, a November finish to the baseball season is going to be more common and the weather can certainly be impactful. In fact, the weather has had a big impact on several World Series games in recent history ranging from biting cold-to-extreme heat and with respect to snow and rain as well.
