1:20 PM | *Major pattern change to cold likely to bring multiple snow threats as well during December*

Paul Dorian

A major pattern change is going to begin in the Mid-Atlantic region during the middle of next week that will likely result in an extended period of colder-than-normal temperatures. In addition, snow will likely become a threat on multiple occasions during the month of December - potentially as early as at the end of next week.

7:00 AM | Noticeably cooler today and a chilly weekend coming...colder pattern begins later next week

Paul Dorian

A weak cold front passed through the region late yesterday and while high pressure will build into the area today, temperatures will be some fifteen degrees lower this afternoon compared to Wednesday. Another cold front will arrive on Friday and this will set the stage for a chilly weekend in the DC metro region.  Looking ahead, a major pattern change will begin by around the middle of next week with a sustained period of colder-than-normal weather coming to the central and eastern US. This change to sustained cold in the Mid-Atlantic region will be brought about by a combination of strong high-latitude blocking (i.e., nearly stationary strong high pressure over Greenland), an intensifying upper-level trough in the central and eastern US, and strong high pressure ridging along the west coasts of Canada and the US.

2:25 PM | **Wall of cold to head into central and eastern US later next week**

Paul Dorian

If you still have to put up outside Christmas lights and rake some more leaves then this weekend may be the last chance with seasonal temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region. There are continuing strong signs for a major pattern shift in the central and eastern half of the nation that will bring some serious and sustained cold thanks to a combination of strong high-latitude blocking centered over Greenland, an intensifying upper-level trough in the central and eastern US, and strong high-pressure ridging along the west coasts of the US and Canada.  The transition time period from the current mild weather pattern to this upcoming cold pattern looks like it will come around next Wednesday, December 6th with the arrival of a strong cold frontal system in the eastern states that will be followed by a wall of cold.

7:00 AM | Well-above normal temperatures today with highs in the low-to-mid 60's...big changes to the overall pattern begin later next week

Paul Dorian

Temperatures this afternoon should climb into the low-to-mid 60's which is well above normal for this time of year, but that will be the high point of the week as colder air pushes in on Thursday shaving about ten degrees off of today's highs. A few showers are possible on Thursday night and then it should generally be seasonably chilly on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Looking ahead, a major pattern change is likely to begin later next week with colder-than-normal conditions coming to the central and eastern US and it looks like this new pattern will stick around for awhile.

11:00 AM | **Winter is coming…significant pattern change begins late next week in the eastern US**

Paul Dorian

If you still have to put up outside Christmas lights and rake some more leaves then this weekend may be the last chance for awhile with seasonal temperatures in the eastern US. There are increasing signs for a major pattern shift to winter weather conditions in the central and eastern US beginning late next week that will feature a combination of strong upper-level blocking over the northern latitudes and a deep trough of low pressure over the central/eastern US.  Once this pattern sets up it could very well stick around for much of the month of December which would, of course, increase our odds for a white Christmas.  Before that, however, the overall weather pattern will be rather quiet for the next week or so featuring mild conditions for the next two days and then a rather unimpressive cold frontal passage that will bring us seasonably chilly air for the end of the week, weekend, and early part of next week.

7:00 AM | Mild next couple days with highs at or slightly above 60 degrees

Paul Dorian

High pressure has pushed off the east coast and the result will be a shift in low-level winds from the northwest-to-southwest. This type of air flow will bring milder air to the Mid-Atlantic region and highs during the next two afternoons could actually approach the 60 degree mark in the DC metro region. A cold front will slide through the region by Thursday and we’ll turn cooler again for the end of the week.

7:00 AM | A relatively quiet week to end November

Paul Dorian

High pressure will edge into the region today and while it’ll remain on the chilly side for this time of year, the winds should lighten up compared to yesterday.  As this high pressure pushes off the coast later tonight and Tuesday, our low-level winds will turn to a southwesterly direction and pump in milder air for Tuesday and Wednesday.  Another cold front is likely to push colder air back into the region later in the week.

7:00 AM | Cold and dry for Thanksgiving Day with plenty of sunshine

Paul Dorian

A cold front has just pushed through the region and it’ll turn out some five-to-ten degrees colder this afternoon compared to yesterday. High pressure will take control for the next few days, but we’ll be on the chilly side of normal from today through Friday despite plenty of sunshine.  It’ll turn slightly milder again on Saturday just ahead of the next cold front and there could be a shower, but then temperatures will drop again on Sunday and Monday following the frontal passage and NW winds will kick up in intensity. The colder-than-normal weather pattern that developed during the first half of the month in the I-95 corridor looks like it will continue right to the end of November with additional cold air outbreaks.

7:00 AM | Comes close to 60 degrees today...Thanksgiving Day looks chilly and dry with sunshine

Paul Dorian

High pressure has pushed off the Mid-Atlantic coastline and this will allow for lower atmosphere winds to turn to more of a southwesterly direction and pump in somewhat milder air compared to the past couple of days. This warm up, however, will be rather brief as another cold front drops through the region early tomorrow and this frontal passage will set the stage for a colder Wednesday and a chilly Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) and Friday. It may turn slightly milder again on Saturday just ahead of the next cold front and there could be a rain shower, but then temperatures will drop some following the frontal passage to end the weekend.

7:00 AM | Dry and quite chilly for Thanksgiving Day

Paul Dorian

High pressure will build into the region today and then push off the mid-Atlantic coastline by tomorrow. As a result, it'll remain chilly today, but southwest winds will boost temperatures well into the 50's on Tuesday. Another cold front will arrive by early Wednesday and it’ll usher in more chilly air for Thanksgiving Day.
