High temperatures today should peak near 75 degrees and then closer to 70 degrees on Thursday afternoon. A cool and unsettled start to the week across the region will give way to drier and warmer conditions for the next few days. Temperatures yesterday were confined to the 60’s but are likely to push to near 70 degrees later today, and then into the 70’s for the next couple of days.

A cool and unsettled start to the new work week with rain showers possible across the metro region and snow across portions of the nearby higher elevation locations. In fact, some of the mountains can receive accumulating snow this morning on the order of a few inches in some spots. The winds will be a noticeable factor today throughout the region with gusts to 40 mph possible. The weather turns drier and warmer for Tuesday and Wednesday and then a mid-week cold frontal passage will bring colder temperatures back to the area for the late week.

A much colder air mass will push into the area today and the transition will come with occasional rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. In fact, it’ll turn cold enough by the early part of the weekend for some snow and there can be accumulations across the I-25 corridor and eastern plains. The second half of the week looks warm, dry and quite windy which can enhance the risk of wildfires in the region. Last week, it was the northern lights and now - for another astronomical treat - a comet should be visible to the naked eye during the next week to ten days or so in the western sky after sunset. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS has now exited the sun’s glare having come closest to the sun in late September. It made its closest approach to Earth this past Saturday, October 11th, passing about 44 million miles away. It is now rising a little bit higher each night in the western sky and remaining visible for a little bit longer period; however, it is also going to lose some its brightness with each passing day.

The dry, warm weather pattern of recent days will continue for the next few days with plenty of sunshine on a daily basis and high temperatures generally well up in the 70’s. As a result of the continued dry conditions, the risk of wildfire activity will remain elevated through much of the week. It’ll turn out a bit cooler today with afternoon highs in the lower 70’s, but then temperatures will climb back into the 80’s for highs on Saturday. Very comfortable conditions return here for the early part of next week with highs generally in the 70’s and overnight lows not far from 50 degrees.
