8:30 AM (Thursday) | *“Rain, rain, go away”...scratch that...”rain, rain, come this way...pour down for even just a day”*

Paul Dorian

October can be a dry month in the Northeast US with the usual overall cooling down of the atmosphere, but this one has been pretty ridiculous. While tropical moisture has inundated the Tennessee Valley/Appalachians and Southeast US during the past couple of weeks, nary a drop has fallen in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor and there is not much reason for hope in the next week or so. Perhaps...just perhaps...there may be some decent rainfall here around the end of the month as a strong cold frontal system heads this way from central Canada.

7:00 AM | *The weekend is shaping up quite nicely with warmer conditions and plenty of sunshine on each day*

Paul Dorian

The chilly air mass of the past few days will modify by week’s end and temperatures are likely to climb back to near 70 degrees on Friday and into the 70’s this weekend. The next several days will feature plenty of sunshine as the recent dry weather pattern continues well into next week. One other note, the comet will remain visible in the western sky during each of the next few evenings assuming favorable sky conditions and a “dark enough” environment...look to the west about 45 minutes after sunset.

7:00 AM | *Remains cool for the next couple of days...warmer for the late week and weekend...comet remains visible in the western sky about 45 minutes after sunset*

Paul Dorian

Today will be the coolest day of the week across northern Alabama with afternoon highs limited to about 60 degrees along with a noticeable breezy out of the north. This chilly air mass will modify by week’s end and temperatures are likely to climb into the 70’s again on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. One other note, a comet will remain be visible in the low western sky during each of the next few evenings assuming favorable sky conditions and a “dark enough” environment...look to the west about 45 minutes after sunset.

7:00 AM | *A couple of quite cool days in the region with the 30's for overnight lows...comet watch continues*

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front pushed through the region on Monday and ushered in the coolest air mass of the season so far. Temperatures this afternoon will hold in the middle 60’s for highs and then even lower on Wednesday afternoon close to the 60-degree mark. This chilly air outbreak will be somewhat short-lived and warmer conditions are going to return to the Tennessee Valley later in the week.

One other note, a comet should continue to be visible in the low western sky during each of the next few evenings given favorable sky conditions and “dark enough” environmental conditions….rough time period for viewing is 45 minutes after sunset.

12:15 PM (Monday)| *Another astronomical treat...a comet after sunset in the western sky during the next week to ten days with best views likely next few evenings...an odd feature*

Paul Dorian

Last week, it was the northern lights and now - for another astronomical treat - a comet should be visible to the naked eye during the next week to ten days or so in the western sky after sunset. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS has now exited the sun’s glare having come closest to the sun in late September. It made its closest approach to Earth this past Saturday, October 11th, passing about 44 million miles away. It is now rising a little bit higher each night in the western sky and remaining visible for a little bit longer period; however, it is also going to lose some its brightness with each passing day.

7:00 AM | *A chilly air mass dominates the eastern states during the next few days*

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front that is trailing a low pressure system to our north will push through the region today and usher in the coolest air mass of the season so far. Temperatures this afternoon will likely peak in the lower 70’s and then be confined to the 60’s for highs on Tuesday and Wednesday. This chilly air outbreak will be rather short-lived and warmer conditions are going to return to the Tennessee Valley later in the week.

7:00 AM | *Dry, warm through Saturday...cooler early next week*

Paul Dorian

The remainder of the week will feature dry and comfortable conditions around here following the passage of a couple of weak frontal systems. Hurricane Milton continues to move along over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico as a “major” and it is headed to the Tampa Bay region of Florida’s western (Gulf) coast for landfall later this evening.

7:00 AM | *Another possible "major" hurricane that is headed to Florida's Gulf coast by mid-week*

Paul Dorian

A frontal system will push through the area today and pave the way for a generally dry week featuring warm days and cool nights. High temperatures during the next few days will be near the 80-degree mark and overnight lows in the lower 50’s with high pressure remaining in control. On the tropical scene, Tropical Storm Milton is likely to intensify into a “major” hurricane during the next couple of days as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico from west-to-east with a possible landfall at mid-week somewhere along Florida’s western Gulf coast.
