7:00 AM | **Threat of rain changing to snow late tonight/early Tuesday with small accumulations possible...overall pattern turning colder**

Paul Dorian

The new work week starts off on the sunny side as high pressure edges into the Mid-Atlantic region. Low pressure passes near our region late tonight and it can bring us some rain which may with or change to snow and small accumulations of a coating to an inch or so are even possible by daybreak; primarily, across the northern suburbs. After highs in the 50’s this afternoon, temperatures will trend downward for the bulk of the week with highs generally in the 40’s…Tuesday and Wednesday will feature a lot of wind to make it feel even colder. Low pressure may try to form near the east coast this weekend with the potential of bringing us rain and/or snow….something to monitor in coming days.

7:00 AM | **Strong low pressure heads towards the Great Lakes...secondary storm to form off the northern Mid-Atlantic coastline**

Paul Dorian

Today will start off quiet, but that’ll change pretty dramatically by day’s end with a potent storm on the way. Strong low pressure will push towards the Great Lakes today and then grind to a halt, transfer its energy to a secondary system off the northern Mid-Atlantic coastline.  The end result around here will be occasional rain from later this afternoon into early Saturday and sleet can mix in at times. In addition, the winds will pick up in intensity and the unstable atmosphere can generate a thunderstorm or two in the region tonight as the secondary low intensifies off the coast. High pressure takes control of the weather in the area later this weekend and sticks around early next week.

Looking ahead, the overall weather pattern across much of the nation will turn colder later next week and beyond due in part to impact from a stratospheric warming event and high-latitude blocking. This colder pattern is quite likely to result in some snow opportunities for the Mid-Atlantic region.

2:00 PM | ***Impactful storm system to reach south-central US tonight after pounding California/SW US…significant snow, excessive rain, damaging ice, severe storms on the table next couple days***

Paul Dorian

A very impactful storm system will slide out of the SW US later today and begin to intensify over the south-central states by later tonight.  After slamming California and the southwestern states, this system will bring accumulating snow, excessive rain, and damaging ice to parts of the eastern half of the nation during the next couple of days.  In addition, this system will contribute to a potential severe weather outbreak from later today into Friday across the south-central US.

7:00 AM | **A mild day on Thursday ahead of a cold front...a chilly rain develops here on Friday and there can be a thunderstorm on Friday night**

Paul Dorian

A cold front will pass through the region later today ushering in colder air for the end of the work week.  On Friday, strong low pressure will push towards the Great Lakes, grind to a halt, and transfer its energy to a secondary storm system off the northern Mid-Atlantic coastline. The result here from this pattern will be occasional rain from later tomorrow into early Saturday and it’ll get quite breezy as well. There is a chance that ice pellets mix in briefly at the onset on Friday and a thunderstorm is on the table for tomorrow night. High pressure returns to the region later in the weekend.

11:30 AM | ***Major storm to impact much of the nation next few days…significant snowfall, flooding rains, ice and a severe weather outbreak***

Paul Dorian

Strong low pressure now over the western US will impact much of the nation in coming days with significant snows, flooding rains, damaging ice, and even a severe weather outbreak. Heavy snow continues to fall today in the higher elevations of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains and will intensify over the Rocky Mountains States from later today into Thursday.  By later tomorrow, the strong surface low will slide into the south-central US and ingredients will likely come together for a severe weather outbreak across the Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys from late tomorrow into Friday. After that, this major storm system will push towards the Great Lakes on Friday, grind to a halt as it becomes influenced by intensifying high-latitude blocking and transfer its energy to a secondary low pressure system that will form off the northern Mid-Atlantic coastline. The result will be a significant snow event late in the week across parts of the Upper Midwest and Northeast US and ice can become a serious issue as well in some sections.

7:00 AM | *Improvement today with plenty of sunshine as high pressure edges into the area *

Paul Dorian

High pressure pushes into the region today generating plenty of sunshine and milder conditions.  Clouds increase tonight ahead of the next frontal system and there can be some late night/Thursday morning shower activity.  It stays mild on Thursday, but colder air pushes in for Friday as strong low pressure heads towards the Great Lakes from the south-central states.  A wintry mix is possible on Friday before a likely changeover to all rain as the primary low pressure system gives way to a secondary storm off the Mid-Atlantic coastline.

1:00 PM | ***Major storm to impact much of the nation in coming days…excessive rainfall, significant snow, ice…and a possible severe weather outbreak***

Paul Dorian

As one storm begins to exit off the Northeast US coastline, another one is already impacting northern California with rain in the lower elevations and snows in the mountains. This system will become a major storm and impact much of the nation in coming days with significant snow, ice and rain all the way from California-to-New England. There is also the threat of a severe weather outbreak later in the week across the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys.

7:00 AM | *Low pressure slowly pulls away from the Mid-Atlantic coastline*

Paul Dorian

Low pressure slowly pushes away from the Mid-Atlantic coastline today and clouds will linger this morning with occasional light rain or drizzle. Clearing will take place tonight and temperatures will drop back to the 20’s in the overnight hours, but then rebound to 50 degrees on Wednesday afternoon. The mild weather pattern continues on Thursday ahead of the next cold front which will usher in colder air for the end of the week. Strong low pressure will head towards the Great Lakes on Friday and a secondary system may form near the Mid-Atlantic coastline likely resulting in primarily another rain event for the local region.

12:45 PM | ***Strong and complex storm system to bring wintry precipitation to the northern Mid-Atlantic region from late today into early Tuesday***

Paul Dorian

There will be some wintry precipitation from late today into mid-day Tuesday across the northern Mid-Atlantic region where such occurrences have been rather limited in recent weeks to say the least. A strong and complex storm system will feature a primary (initial) low pressure system that pushes northeastward later today into the Great Lakes and then a secondary low pressure system will develop later tonight along the Mid-Atlantic coastline. A wintry mix of rain, ice and snow is likely across the Philly metro region and snow and/or sleet will likely be the dominate precipitation types from east-central PA northeastward to southeastern New York State. Small accumulations of snow and ice are possible in the suburbs of Philadelphia where the sleet can actually come down heavy at times, moderate accumulation amounts in the Lehigh Valley and New York City, and more significant levels are likely in the higher elevations of the Poconos/northeastern PA, interior NW New Jersey, and N/W suburbs of NYC.

7:00 AM | ***A wintry mix for late today and tonight...small accumulations of ice and snow likely across northern/western suburbs***

Paul Dorian

Strong and complex low pressure tracks into the Great Lakes today and it’ll likely bring a decent amount of precipitation to the Mid-Atlantic region and the precipitation type will be location dependent. Plain rain is to be the predominate precipitation type in areas to the south of the PA/MD border while a wintry mix is likely in the Philly metro region where the sleet can actually come down heavily at times. Snow and sleet are likely to dominate the scene from east-central and northeastern PA-to-northern New Jersey and into New York City. In terms of ice and snow accumulations, the northern/western suburbs of Philly (e.g., Chester, Montgomery, Lower Bucks Counties) can see a coating to a couple of inches of ice and snow by later tonight…2-4 inches likely in Upper Bucks County, the Lehigh Valley, and in the New York City metro region…as much as 3-6 inches from the Poconos/northeastern PA to interior northwest New Jersey. Another strong system may threaten the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor with rain and/or snow by the end of the week.
