7:00 AM | More rain from later tonight into early Friday along with possible thunderstorms as wet pattern continues...weekend looking only so-so

Paul Dorian

Yet another vigorous upper-level low will head towards the Northeast US over the next couple of days and it will help to generate more rain for the region from tonight into late tomorrow night and there can be thunderstorms mixed into the picture – some of which can be on the strong side.  This system will slowly depart on Friday and the weekend should begin on the dry side; however, occasional showers and possible thunderstorms threaten for late Saturday, Saturday night, Sunday and Monday.

7:00 AM | Wet pattern to continue next few days...mixed picture for the weekend

Paul Dorian

The cold front that passed through the region on Monday has stalled just offshore and low pressure will ride along its boundary zone over the next 24 hours and generate more showers in the region later today and tonight.  Upper-level low will then intensify over the Northeast US by Thursday and will likely produce more rain here from late tomorrow into Thursday.  The weather does improve on Friday as we end the work week and it should be quite nice to start the holiday weekend; however, showers threaten for Sunday and Monday.

7:00 AM | Wet pattern through Thursday...nicer on Friday and Saturday, showers threaten for Sunday and Monday

Paul Dorian

A cold front will close in on the east coast today and generate rain in much of the I-95 corridor and maybe a thunderstorm or two.  This front will stall just offshore and low pressure will ride along impacting the region later tomorrow into Wednesday.  Another front approaches the east coast on Thursday keeping the weather quite unsettled with another shot at showers and thunderstorms. High pressure will follow for the end of the week and stick around into the upcoming weekend likely giving us nice weather for Friday and Saturday, but showers threaten for Sunday and Monday.

2:45 PM | *Threat for showers and thunderstorms next several hours as cold front approaches - some of the storms can be strong*

Paul Dorian

A cold front is pushing towards the east coast and scattered showers and thunderstorms are now popping in areas to the west of the I-95 corridor. The coverage of showers and thunderstorms should increase over the next couple of hours and can impact the I-95 corridor from mid-afternoon to late evening. While many areas will not get hit, any storm can produce gusty winds, cloud-to-ground lightning and brief downpours. The chances for showers and thunderstorms will tend to increase as one goes farther southwest along I-95 with DC, for example, having a better shot than New York City.

7:00 AM | Another very warm and humid day, but weekend looks much cooler

Paul Dorian

It’ll stay quite warm today with highs near 90 degrees to end the work week, but there is relief coming this weekend as a cold front pushes through the region.  As the front arrives later today, there will likely be scattered showers and thunderstorms and an isolated storm can be on the strong-to-severe side.  Behind the front, low-level winds will shift from southwest to east-to-northeast and that will bring much cooler air into the region from off of the still-chilly waters of the western Atlantic Ocean.  Temperatures this weekend are likely to be held to the lower 70’s for highs on both days.  On Monday, a strong cold front is likely to produce showers and thunderstorms up and down the I-95 corridor as it pushes eastward from the Ohio Valley.

7:00 AM | Very warm to close out the work week...noticeably cooler this weekend...dangerous setup today for Oklahoma and Kansas

Paul Dorian

First, a very dangerous setup is unfolding for later today in Oklahoma and Kansas and unfortunately, it will likely result in a widespread tornado outbreak - warn anyone you may know out there to stay on guard this afternoon and evening.  Around here, a dramatic surge of very warm air  pushed afternoon temperatures to well up in the 80’s on Wednesday and they can climb into the lower 90’s later today with possible record-breaking levels attained in some spots of the Mid-Atlantic.  It’ll stay quite warm on Friday as well with highs well up in the 80’s to end the work week, but there is relief coming this weekend as a back door cold front pushes through the region.  This front will bring about a low-level wind shift from southwest to northeast – and that will bring much cooler air into the region from off of the still-chilly waters of the western Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures this weekend are likely to be held to in the low-to-mid 70's for highs on both days. On Monday, a strong cold front is likely to produce PM showers and thunderstorms up and down the I-95 corridor as it pushes eastward from the Ohio Valley.  Looking ahead, there are signs for a cooler-than-normal pattern to set up again in much of the eastern half of the nation as we head into the Memorial Day weekend.

12:05 PM | *Cooler-than-normal pattern likely to return heading into the Memorial Day weekend*

Paul Dorian

The next few days will bring some of the warmest conditions so far this year into the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor including the first 90 degree readings in some spots and possible record-breaking high temperatures. This warm spell does not, however, mark the end of the cool air outbreaks for the eastern US and there are signs for fairly sustained cooler-than-normal period as we head into the Memorial Day weekend.

7:00 AM | *90+ degrees today and Thursday...back door cold front brings us cooler weekend*

Paul Dorian

A surge of very warm air will push temperatures to or slightly above the 90 degree mark later today and tomorrow afternoon – perhaps even to record high levels in some spots on Thursday.  It’ll stay quite warm on Friday as well with highs well up in the 80’s to end the work week, but there is relief coming this weekend as a classic back door cold front pushes through the region.  This front will bring about a low-level wind shift from southwest to northeast – and that would bring much cooler air into the region from the still-chilly waters of the western Atlantic Ocean.  Temperatures this weekend are likely to be held in the 70’s for highs on both days.  On Monday, a strong cold front is liable to produce showers and thunderstorms up and down the I-95 corridor as it pushes in from the Ohio Valley.  Looking elsewhere, while the eastern states experience a surge of very warm air, cold air for this time of year is plunging into the western states and there may actually be a foot or more of snow in Denver later in the week.

7:00 AM | *80+ degrees today...90 degrees tomorrow and Thursday...cooler this weekend*

Paul Dorian

After a long stretch with primarily cooler-than-normal conditions, summer will explode onto the scene over the next couple of days and 90 degrees can be reached for highs in the DC metro region on both Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.  It'll stay quite warm on Friday and then temperatures will slide back this weekend following the passage of a weak frontal system and the building of high pressure across the Northeast US. Looking ahead, there will likely be more cool shots for the Northeast US as we progress through May. In fact, there are early signs for a decent cool shot to arrive here during the Memorial Day weekend.

7:00 AM | Summer explodes onto the scene by mid-week...90 degrees possible on Wednesday and Thursday

Paul Dorian

Summer explodes onto the scene by mid-week!  The deep and slow-moving upper-level low pressure system that helped to spawn the early weekend coastal storm and the late weekend unsettled weather conditions will push off the Northeast US coastline over the next couple of days.  As a result, much warmer air will advance northeastward from the southern states over the next couple of days and temperatures around here should reach well into the 80’s by Wednesday afternoon - perhaps 90 degrees in a few spots.  Once this very warm air arrives in the Mid-Atlantic region, it looks like it should stick around right into the end of the upcoming weekend.
