***No hurricanes so far in the 2026 Atlantic tropical season and that puts us in rare territory...there are some signals, however, for activity going forward***

Paul Dorian

We have now reached rare territory for the Atlantic Basin due to the lack of hurricanes at this stage of the tropical season. In fact, this is the latest time without an Atlantic hurricane during the satellite era which began in 1966 and there is likelihood that one has to go all the way back to 1941 though confidence in the tracking of hurricanes is far less certain in the pre-satellite era. Having said that, an extremely quiet first half of the tropical season does not guarantee an uneventful second half…indeed, there are some signals that activity will pick up later this month.

6:00 AM | *A refreshing start to the week in the Mid-Atlantic region*

Paul Dorian

On the heels of a frontal passage, the first half of the new work week should be quite comfortable in the Mid-Atlantic region with low humidity values. High pressure to our northwest will be in control and today will feature quite breezy conditions with a stiff northerly flow of refreshing air. Another cold front could bring showers to the area late in the week or early in the upcoming weekend.

6:00 AM | **An unsettled weekend with additional showers and possible thunderstorms...some of the rain can be heavy**

Paul Dorian

A cold frontal system is pushing through the region today and there will be plenty of clouds and maybe a shower or two in the area. A disturbance form the Tennessee Valley will push northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend and the result will be showers here by tomorrow night and possible thunderstorms…some of the rain can be heavy. Some improvement is likely later Sunday and the new work week should start with plenty of sunshine on Monday and Tuesday and moderately warm conditions.

6:00 AM | *Weak frontal system can produce a few showers here later today/tonight...another disturbance likely brings showers to the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend*

Paul Dorian

A weak cold front will approach the region later today and it can produce a couple of showers around here, but nothing significant or long-lasting is expected. The front should clear the coast on Friday morning paving the way for a comfortably warm end to the shortened work week and some clearing skies in the afternoon with temperatures peaking near the 80-degree mark. Another disturbance will arrive this weekend and it can cause showers and thunderstorms in the region from later Saturday into Sunday.

6:00 AM | *Next frontal system approaches on Thursday with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms*

Paul Dorian

High pressure will continue to generate tranquil and warm conditions around here today, but a cold front will head in this direction on Thursday. This next front will raise the chance of showers and thunderstorms later tomorrow and early tomorrow night, but it doesn’t look as widespread of an event as we have experienced in recent days. High pressure should follow the frontal passage for the end of the week with rain-free and warm conditions likely on Friday, but another disturbance can bring us showers during the second half of the upcoming weekend.

High pressure will continue to generate tranquil and moderately warm conditions around here through the middle of the week. The next weather system of note will be a cold front that approaches the Mid-Atlantic region on Thursday likely bringing with it an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms. 6:00 AM | *Somewhat unsettled for another day in the Mid-Atlantic region...quieter this Labor Day weekend and becoming more comfortable*

Paul Dorian

Unsettled weather will continue for a bit longer in the NYC metro region with another shower or thunderstorm possible as we close out the work week, but primarily, a rain-free day. The weekend looks to be much quieter as high pressure builds in from our northwest and more comfortable air pushes into the area. Temperatures this weekend will be at or slightly below normal and overall humidity will drop to noticeably more comfortable levels.

6:00 AM | **Additional showers and thunderstorms as unsettled pattern continues...weekend looking good**

Paul Dorian

The unsettled weather pattern continues for another couple of days in the Mid-Atlantic region with occasional showers and thunderstorms…any storm can be strong and some of the rain can be heavy. After a break in the heat on Wednesday, southwesterly flow should push much warmer air back into the region later today and temperatures likely will climb to the middle 80’s. A comfortable air mass should drop southward into the region for much of the Labor Day weekend featuring at or slightly below-normal temperatures and lowering humidity values.

One final note…anyone planning to travel to Penn State for their first game on Saturday (@3:30pm) can expect to see mainly sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 70’s.

6:00 AM | **Noticeably cooler today with a low-level E-NE flow of air**

Paul Dorian

A frontal boundary zone has dropped to the south of here and this should knock off several degrees for today’s highs compared to Tuesday as a low-level east-to-northeast flow has formed. There will be the chance of light rain or drizzle today and the chance of showers and thunderstorms later tonight and on Thursday when temperatures will climb back to very warm levels. Any storm that forms later tonight and on Thursday can be strong with heavy downpours on the table. The same front should clear through the region by the end of the week paving the way for a comfortable Labor Day weekend.

6:00 AM | ***Continued very unsettled for the next few days with a daily shot of showers/storms...some storms can be severe...weekend looking comfortable***

Paul Dorian

The next few days will remain on the unsettled side across the Mid-Atlantic region with an occasional shower or thunderstorm. Any storm that forms can be severe and produce damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours. The month of September will start quite warm as well as unsettled with 85 degree highs on the table for this afternoon. Signs continue to point to a cold frontal passage by the end of the week which should result in a comfortable Labor Day weekend.
