A warm up begins today in the Mid-Atlantic region, but it really intensifies on Saturday as winds will increase substantially as we begin the weekend from a southwesterly direction. In fact, winds on Saturday can gust past 50 mph and temperatures should soar well up into the 60’s around here which would threaten the December 11th record of of 65 degrees set in 1971. Late day and evening showers are likely to accompany the approach of the incoming strong cold front and there can even be a strong thunderstorm as well in some spots. Following the passage of the strong cold front, it’ll turn noticeably colder on Sunday with afternoon highs likely confined to the 40’s. Looking ahead, much of next week will turn out to be warmer-than-normal across the eastern two-thirds of the nation as strong high pressure ridging develops over the Great Lakes.

While the weather today is pretty cold in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US with a touch of snow in some spots, a big warm up is coming by the weekend and the bulk of next week looks to be on the warm side of normal as we head towards the middle part of December. In fact, the surge of warmth expected this Saturday is likely to come with record high temperatures in much of the eastern US including along the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Temperatures could actually soar towards the 70 degree mark in DC and Philly and climb into the middle 60’s in NYC – all well above-normal for this time of year and all would threaten record highs. Weak low pressure will push to a position off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by later today and it could produce a touch of snow in some spots at times, but its overall impact will be very limited. This system features little support in the upper atmosphere, a limited amount of moisture, and any intensification of the surface low is going to wait until it is well off the east coast. It’ll turn very windy and much milder today just ahead of the front along with a few rain showers. Temperatures will drop sharply in the overnight hours behind the front as the strong winds shift to a northwesterly direction. After a cold, dry and much less windy day on Tuesday, low pressure will push to a position off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early Wednesday morning. The fresh cold air mass that arrives shortly following the passage of the front will maintain its ground at mid-week allowing for primarily snow in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US and minor accumulations are on the table.
