10:45 AM | *A quiet and relatively mild week continues across the eastern US…California continues to get pounded...some signs for the beginnings of a colder pattern next week across the northern US*

Paul Dorian

The weather continues to be quiet across much of the eastern part of the nation and relatively mild for the middle portion of December. Meanwhile, a powerful storm is pounding away at California with heavy rainfall along coastal sections and heavy snows across inland, higher elevation locations. This same storm system will push into the central Plains on Wednesday and likely result in a widespread area that will experience record-breaking warmth and also powerful wind gusts of 50-60 mph. In the Mid-Atlantic region, the warmer-than-normal weather will likely peak on Thursday afternoon with temperatures climbing to 60+ degrees in the DC-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Looking ahead, there are several signals that point to a colder weather pattern for the northern US beginning early next week and this same change could also bring about a substantial cold period to eastern Europe/Russia later in the month.

7:00 AM | *Chilly next couple of days with high pressure to the north...warmer on Thursday with highs near 60 degrees*

Paul Dorian

It’ll stay on the chilly side for the next couple of days as we’ll be under the influence of Canadian high pressure located across southeastern Canada. On Thursday, this system will shift to a position off the east coast and it’ll turn warmer around here with temperatures likely to reach the 60 degree mark. It’ll turn cooler behind a frontal system on Friday and then another cold front is likely to approach on Saturday with showers a good bet.

11:30 AM | *A quiet and relatively mild week across the eastern US…a colder look to the pattern next week*

Paul Dorian

The weather this week will be quiet across much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation and relatively mild for the middle portion of December. The warmer-than-normal weather this week will likely peak on Thursday in the Mid-Atlantic region with temperatures probably reaching into the 60’s in the DC-Philly-to-NYC corridor. A different story is possible next week, however, as the overall pattern shows some signs of turning colder and potentially stormy in the northeastern part of the nation.

7:00 AM | *A quite and relatively mild week across much of the eastern half of the nation*

Paul Dorian

After a chilly day on Sunday, it’ll turn a bit milder today and stay warmer-than-normal through the week. High pressure will be in control in much of the eastern US for the next several days although there will be a couple of weak frontal systems to deal at times. A stronger cold front will head this way this weekend and that is likely to result in a cool down by the end of the weekend. One final note, record high temperature were indeed set on Saturday in DC (70 degrees), Philly (68 degrees) and New York City’s Central Park (66 degrees).

11:30 AM | ***Surge of record-warmth on Saturday in eastern US to be accompanied by showers/strong storms...wind gusts past 50 mph...severe weather today Mississippi Valley including tornado threat***

Paul Dorian

The weather has been rather chilly in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US during the past few days, but a major league warm-up is coming on Saturday. In fact, the surge of warmth tomorrow will quite likely result in record highs in many spots including perhaps the DC, Philly and NYC metro regions. Another factor on Saturday will be the winds which will intensify substantially ahead of an incoming strong cold front perhaps gusting up to 55 mph or so. Showers are likely to accompany this frontal system on Saturday in the eastern states and there can even be some strong thunderstorm activity. It’ll turn considerably colder on Sunday following the frontal passage, but then warmer conditions will return next week. For today, the warm air will explode northward through the Mississippi Valley and a severe weather outbreak is on the table which includes the threat of tornadoes.

7:00 AM | ***Possible record-breaking warmth on Saturday and becoming very windy...noticeably colder on Sunday***

Paul Dorian

A warm up begins today in the Mid-Atlantic region, but it really intensifies on Saturday as winds will increase substantially as we begin the weekend from a southwesterly direction. In fact, winds on Saturday can gust past 50 mph and temperatures should soar well up into the 60’s around here which would threaten the December 11th record of of 65 degrees set in 1971. Late day and evening showers are likely to accompany the approach of the incoming strong cold front and there can even be a strong thunderstorm as well in some spots. Following the passage of the strong cold front, it’ll turn noticeably colder on Sunday with afternoon highs likely confined to the 40’s. Looking ahead, much of next week will turn out to be warmer-than-normal across the eastern two-thirds of the nation as strong high pressure ridging develops over the Great Lakes.

7:00 AM | *Cold and dry today...a surge of record-warmth possible here on Saturday*

Paul Dorian

Today will be a cold and dry day in the Mid-Atlantic region with plenty of cloud cover, but a big time warm up is coming by the weekend ahead of the next strong cold front. The surge of warmth expected on Saturday is likely to come with strong southwesterly winds and record high temperatures in much of the eastern US including perhaps the DC, Philly and NYC metro regions. Temperatures could actually soar into the upper 60’s around here which would break the record of 65 degrees set back in 1971. It’ll turn noticeably colder on Sunday following the passage of a strong cold front. However, the bulk of next week looks to be quite warm across the eastern two-thirds of the nation as strong high pressure ridging develops over the Great Lakes.

10:30 AM | ***A surge of record-breaking warmth on Saturday in the eastern states with powerful and potentially damaging winds***

Paul Dorian

While the weather today is pretty cold in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US with a touch of snow in some spots, a big warm up is coming by the weekend and the bulk of next week looks to be on the warm side of normal as we head towards the middle part of December. In fact, the surge of warmth expected this Saturday is likely to come with record high temperatures in much of the eastern US including along the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Temperatures could actually soar towards the 70 degree mark in DC and Philly and climb into the middle 60’s in NYC – all well above-normal for this time of year and all would threaten record highs. This surge of record-breaking warmth will come ahead of the next strong cold front which can produce severe thunderstorms on Friday in the Mississippi Valley and even some strong thunderstorm activity later Saturday in the eastern states.

7:00 AM | *Weak low pressure can produce a touch of snow in spots...surge of record warmth possible on Saturday*

Paul Dorian

Weak low pressure will push to a position off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by later today and it could produce a touch of snow in some spots at times, but its overall impact will be very limited. This system features little support in the upper atmosphere, a limited amount of moisture, and any intensification of the surface low is going to wait until it is well off the east coast. It remains cold on Thursday, but will turn much milder again by the beginning of the weekend. In fact, a surge of warmth on Saturday could bring record high temperatures to the metro region with temperatures soaring towards 70 degrees…turns colder again on Sunday.

7:00 AM | *Cold, dry today with much less wind than yesterday...a touch of snow possible on Wednesday*

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front passed through the region in the overnight hours with scattered showers and some very gusty winds. After a cold, dry and much less windy day on Tuesday, weak low pressure will push to a position off the Mid-Atlantic coastline by early tomorrow morning. This system has little support aloft, limited moisture, and should only be able to produce a touch of snow in portions of the Mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday. It remains cold on Thursday, but will turn much milder again by the beginning of the weekend.
