6:30 AM | **Dry and cool for the rest of the week following today's frontal passage...another "major" hurricane headed to Florida**

Paul Dorian

A cold front will cross the area this morning and pave the way for a cool and dry rest of the week in the Mid-Atlantic region. Temperatures today can climb into the low-to-mid 70’s for afternoon highs and then will likely be confined to the 60’s for the rest of the week with overnight lows well down in the 40’s. In an instant classic on Sunday, the weather was spectacular in South Philly for the Phillies/Mets game and it should be dry and cool in NYC for games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On the tropical scene, Milton is now a category 2 hurricane and is likely to intensify into a “major” hurricane as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico with a possible landfall on Wednesday afternoon somewhere along Florida’s west-central Gulf coast and perhaps right in the Tampa Bay region.

9:30 AM (Sunday) - ***Another “major” hurricane may be headed towards Florida’s Gulf coast…possible mid-week landfall right near the Tampa Bay region***

Paul Dorian

Another “major” hurricane may be headed towards Florida’s Gulf coast with a possible mid-week landfall right near the Tampa Bay region. “Milton” became a named tropical storm on Saturday over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and it is likely to attain hurricane status by later Sunday as it begins a move to the east. Given the generally favorable environmental conditions, Milton could then become a “major” hurricane as early as Monday as it continues on a trek towards Florida’s west coast.

7:00 AM | *Quite warm and continued dry next several days*

Paul Dorian

The overall pattern during the next several days will produce rather nice weather for us featuring dry conditions and plenty of sunshine on a daily basis. High temperatures during the next several days will generally fall into the range of the low-to-mid 80’s which is well above normal for this time of year.

6:15 AM | *Nice weather for the weekend throughout the Mid-Atlantic region...weekend auroras possible*

Paul Dorian

Weak high pressure remains in control of the weather around here today with clouds and limited sunshine expected and then another weak cool front will pass through in the overnight hours…perhaps generating a shower or two. The frontal passage later tonight will pave the way for a nice weekend in the Mid-Atlantic region with plenty of sunshine expected on both days. Another cool front will cross the area on Sunday night and Monday and this one will usher in a cool air mass with highs on Tuesday and Wednesday likely to be confined to the 60’s. Two other notes…a tropical system may form over the Gulf of Mexico by early next week with its highest chance of impact likely limited to Florida sometime later next week. Also, the strongest solar flare of the current solar cycle, #25, will impact the Earth’s atmosphere later this weekend and the potential exists for widespread auroras.

The frontal passage later tonight will pave the way for a nice weekend in the Mid-Atlantic region and a great start to “Red October” for the Phillies opening two playoff games on Saturday and Sunday (both at 4 PM). 1:00 PM | ***Strongest solar flare yet of Solar Cycle 25 took place earlier today...CME to strike this weekend with widespread auroras possible***

Paul Dorian

Solar Cycle 25 is nearing its solar maximum and - as is typical during this phase of a solar cycle - there has been a lot of solar activity in recent weeks with numerous sunspots. The strongest solar flare yet during this current solar cycle took place earlier today with an explosion originating from sunspot region known officially as “AR3842”. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded today’s blast as an X9.0 (where X-class denotes the most intense flares) and it may result in widespread auroras this weekend as the “coronal mass ejection” strikes Earth.

7:15 AM | *Mission to Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa, begins a week from now on October 10th…amazing work by Galileo 400+ years ago on the largest planet in our solar system and its moons*

Paul Dorian

Galileo turned his primitive telescope towards Jupiter in the early 1600’s and saw tiny specks of light with no discernable features. What a difference 400+ years can make as today’s backyard telescopes can resolve Europa’s disk surprisingly well. Europa is now considered one of the most complex and fascinating worlds in the solar system. Cracks, ridges, and chaotic terrain on the moon's icy crust may offer access to one of the largest oceans in the solar system--and a possible abode for aquatic life. NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft, due to launch one week from now on October 10th, will conduct a detailed reconnaissance of the moon's surface to help plan future missions including a lander and perhaps even a submarine. Europa Clipper’s main science goal is to determine whether there are places below the surface of Europa that could support life.

7:00 AM | *Frontal passage shaves some ten degrees off our temperatures with highs near 80 degrees later today compared with 90 degrees on Wednesday*

Paul Dorian

The overall pattern during the next several days will produce rather nice weather for us featuring dry conditions and plenty of sunshine on a daily basis. The temperatures will vary quite a bit from day-to-day with highs near 80 degrees this afternoon, back up into the mid-to-upper 80’s on Friday and Saturday, and then  back down again on Sunday to near 80 degrees for afternoon highs.
