The main theme of the overall weather pattern for the next several days is “dry” with no rain or snow on the horizon. It’ll be on the cool side for the next couple of days, but then it turns warmer this weekend with highs by Sunday afternoon likely to be well up in the 70’s.

Strong low pressure pushes into the northeastern states today and we’ll have windy and cool conditions in its wake across the Tennessee Valley. Temperatures later today are likely to reach the middle or upper 50’s for afternoon highs and then could edge into the 60’s on Friday. Patchy frost is possible late tomorrow night and again late tomorrow night in a few valley regions with overnight lows in the 30’s.

A powerful storm system will produce strong winds in the Mid-Atlantic region and periods of rain today which will be heavy at times…there can be a strong-to-severe thunderstorm as well. The rain tapers off to isolated showers by early tonight, but the strong winds will continue as the storm system pushes off to the northeast of here. Winds remain very strong on Friday (Halloween Day) with gusts to 45 mph to go along with sunshine and cool conditions. The weekend will be dry and cool with sunshine on both days and afternoon highs likely in the mid-to-upper 50’s.

3I/ATLAS was discovered by telescope on July 1st, 2025, and it has been classified as interstellar because its trajectory is hyperbolic meaning it is not gravitationally bound to our solar system. It will pass closest to the sun later today, at about 1.4 astronomical units (AU) or about 130 million miles, and then make its nearest approach to Earth on December 19th, 2025, at about 1.8 AU or about 170 million miles. NASA has been tracking the object for months, noting unusual movements and energy signatures that don’t match the behavior of typical comets. It is the third interstellar object ever recorded, quite likely the oldest at 7+ billion years old, largest, and fastest moving, and this is the first time through our solar system.

An active weather pattern is setting up over the continental US featuring a deepening upper-level trough over the Tennessee Valley. This deepening low in the upper atmosphere will help to spawn a strong low pressure system at the surface-level which will then move in a northeasterly direction resulting in a soaking event for much of the Mid-Atlantic region from later today into later Thursday …1-3 inches on the table. The rain may linger for a bit on Friday morning in the northern Mid-Atlantic region, but the bulk of the day on Friday (Halloween Day) should feature cool and very windy conditions with gusts possible to 40 mph or so to go along with partly sunny skies. The weekend is looking dry and cool with sunshine on each day and highs likely in the upper 50’s.

Hurricane Melissa has reached the southwestern coast of Jamaica as a category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph. The hurricane has turned to the northeast and should continue on this path during the next few days with an accelerated motion. After hitting Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa will cross over eastern Cuba – likely as a major hurricane – and then to the southeastern part of the Bahama Island chain in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. By late Thursday, Melissa could come very close to the island of Bermuda or move directly over as it picks up some forward speed and continues on a northeasterly direction...eventually bringing it out to the open waters of the North Atlantic by the upcoming weekend.
