It turns comfortably warm today with plenty of sunshine and afternoon high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70’s. The remainder of the week looks to remain on the dry side as the overall relatively quiet weather pattern continues across much of the Rocky Mountain States.

There will be as many as three cold fronts to deal with in the northeastern part of the nation during the next week or so, but the third system will be the most important and is destined to arrive late in the upcoming weekend. The first cold front comes through on Wednesday night primarily on the dry side and it turns slightly cooler behind it on Thursday. The second cold front then arrives at the end of the work week likely producing some shower activity from late Friday night into early Saturday; however, temperatures will hardly change at all this weekend following its passage. It is the third cold front that arrives on Sunday night that will be very noticeable as it is at the leading edge of an Arctic air mass…the coldest air so far this season. This cold air outbreak early next week may be accompanied by some early season accumulating snow across the Great Lakes, interior sections of the Northeast US and New England.

Low pressure will push off the Carolina coast today and it looks like its precipitation field will extend north and west to the I-95 corridor. As a result, clouds will be plentiful through early afternoon and there can be a couple of showers in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor…some clearing late in the day. High pressure is in control for the next couple of days and then one cold front crosses the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday night and a second one on Friday night.

Rapid changes in weather can be experienced in the northeastern US during the latter stages of October as to the west, cold Canadian air masses begin to regularly drop from Canada into the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest and to the east, the Atlantic Ocean remains relatively warm as it loses its stored summer heat more slowly than the continent. In fact, hurricanes can still form over the still relatively warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the contrast between the increasingly frequent cold air masses to the west and the warmth to the east often results in powerful storms just offshore. In late October 1991, several ingredients converged to create an immensely powerful storm that took on a few names including “The Halloween Nor’easter” or the “Unnamed Hurricane”. The most well-known name for this storm, however, is “The Perfect Storm” with a book and subsequent film of the same name.

The powerful storm system that brought heavy rain and strong winds to the area on Thursday has pushed off to our northeast and there should be some sunshine today in its wake today. But the bigger story will be the howling winds on our Halloween Day which can gust to 50 mph from a west-to-northwest direction…power outages are on the table. A very tight pressure gradient is now developing between the powerful departing storm system and an incoming high pressure system over the Northern Plains. High pressure will be in control of the weather this weekend resulting in cool, dry conditions, but winds will still be somewhat of a factor on Saturday.
One final note...it is time once again to turn the clocks back an hour...early Sunday morning.

The main theme of the overall weather pattern for the next several days is “dry” with no rain or snow on the horizon. It’ll be on the cool side for another day, but then it turns warmer this weekend with highs by Sunday afternoon likely to be well up in the 70’s.
