7:00 AM | Big warm up begins today

Paul Dorian

A major warm up begins today in the Mid-Atlantic region and it’ll reach its peak in the Wednesday-to-Friday time frame. Temperatures today should climb right through the 70’s and then 80+ degrees are very likely on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. A cool front arrives in the region late Friday and it could be accompanied by some showers and thunderstorms and it’ll turn a bit cooler this weekend following the frontal passage. Elsewhere, it has been a slow tornado season so far this year across the central Plains, but there could be an outbreak of severe weather on Wednesday as a clash develops in that part of the country between very warm, humid advancing northward from the Gulf of Mexico air and cold air sliding eastward across the southwestern US.

7:00 AM | A change to May (Tuesday) brings a major warm up to the area

Paul Dorian

A major warm up arrives this week and it will begin in earnest on Tuesday as temperatures climb through the 70’s tomorrow afternoon and this warmer-than-normal stretch of weather should continue right through the end of the work week. In fact, temperatures later this week will likely climb well into the 80’s and some spots may flirt with the 90 degree mark for highs on Thursday afternoon. A cool front arrives late Friday and it could be accompanied by showers and thunderstorms.

7:00 AM | *More scattered showers this morning and again late tomorrow/early tomorrow night...major warm up next week begins on Tuesday*

Paul Dorian

Fast-moving low pressure is generating more rain in the Mid-Atlantic region, but it will be replaced by high pressure as we begin the last weekend of April. Unfortunately, that high pressure system will also be a quick-mover and a strong cold front will arrive later in the day on Saturday and late day/early evening showers are likely, maybe even an isolated thunderstorm. Much cooler-than-normal air will push into the region for late Saturday night and Sunday with highs confined to the 50’s as we close out the weekend. A major warm up will begin in earnest on Tuesday as temperatures climb well up into the 70’s and this warmer-than-normal stretch of weather should continue through the end of the work week. In fact, temperatures later next week should easily reach the 80’s for highs and some spots may see a flirtation with the 90 degree.

7:00 AM | Quick-moving low pressure brings more rain to the region late tonight and Friday

Paul Dorian

A much better day is on tap for today following the dreary day on Wednesday which was filled with clouds and light rain. Today’s dramatic improvement will be rather short-lived; however, as a quick-moving low pressure system will impact the region late tonight and Friday with more clouds and rain. High pressure then pushes rapidly into the area on Saturday, but this will be quickly followed by a strong cold front passage on Saturday night and the front could spawn a few showers around here during the PM hours. Following this cold frontal passage, much cooler air will return for later Saturday night and Sunday with temperatures again below-normal for this time of year. Looking ahead, a major warm up is coming to the Mid-Atlantic region for the Tuesday-to-Friday time period of next week with the 80’s very likely for highs on some of those days.

10:15 AM | *Major warm up next week as the month of May begins, but not yet the permanent switch to summer*

Paul Dorian

There will be another chilly shot of air dropping southeastward this weekend into the Northeast US and Sunday will turn out to be cooler-than-normal for this time of year, but there are signs that a major warm up is coming next week.  In fact, it looks like the major warm up will coincide quite nicely with the calendar change to May (on Tuesday) with the 80’s quite likely for highs during this warm stretch of weather - perhaps even with a run at the 90 degree mark at some point later next week.  Looking even farther ahead, next week’s warm up does not appear to be the end of the cooler-than-normal air masses coming our way as it is likely to turn much cooler again during the second week of the new month.

7:00 AM | Low pressure slowly works its way through the area

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will move slowly through the region today and there will be plenty of clouds and residual occasional light rain and drizzle. A better day is on tap for Thursday, but another low pressure system should bring more rain to the area by the end of the work week. High pressure will build into the area on Saturday and then a cold frontal passage on Saturday night will usher in cooler air for Sunday.

7:00 AM | *Soaking rain event from later today into Wednesday*

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will move slowly over the next couple of days from the Gulf region to the Mid-Atlantic coastline and this will result in a soaking rain event around here. Rainfall amounts from later today into Wednesday will likely end up in the 1-2 inch range in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor. Another low pressure system and its associated cold front may affect the region with more rain at the end of the week.

7:00 AM | *Soaking rain event on the way*

Paul Dorian

High pressure that provided us with a nice weekend will push off the New England coastline later today and this will open the door for a soaking rain event in the Mid-Atlantic region. Low pressure will lift slowly northward from the Gulf states to the Mid-Atlantic coastline over the next couple of days and the likely result will be 1-2 inches of rainfall in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor by the time later Wednesday rolls around. Another low pressure system and cold front may affect the region by the early part of the weekend.

7:00 AM | A cold and breezy end to the work week, but a decent cool and dry weekend is coming

Paul Dorian

A strong cold front pushed through the region on Thursday and ushered in more unseasonably cold air for the region.  Temperatures today will be confined to the mid-to-upper 50’s for highs which is way below-normal for this time of year and winds will continue to be quite strong out of the northwest generating lower wind chill values.  The weekend will be decent with dry and cool conditions prevailing as high pressure moves into the Northeast US.  Looking ahead, there is the chance for a strong low pressure system to develop near the Mid-Atlantic coastline by the middle of next week and this could lead to another significant rain event for the region.

7:00 AM | Another cold shot arrives tonight...well below-normal temperatures here on Friday with a stiff NW wind

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will push east of here later today and drag a cold front through the region accompanied by showers in the AM hours.  This front will usher in another unseasonably cold air mass for this time of year and strong northwest tonight and Friday will make it feel even colder than the actual air temperature.  Highs on Friday will be confined to the low-to-mid 50’s which is well below normal for mid-April. The weekend will feature dry and cool conditions as high pressure moves into the Northeast US.  Looking ahead, there is the chance for a strong low pressure system to develop near the Mid-Atlantic coastline by the middle of next week and this could lead to another heavy rain event for the region.
