6:00 AM | **One cold front arrives in the Mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday night and a second late Friday night...third cold front on Sunday night means business**

Paul Dorian

High pressure will take control of the weather in the Mid-Atlantic region for today and tomorrow providing us with plenty of sunshine each day and quite breezy conditions. A cold front passes through the Mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday night - likely on the dry side - and it’ll usher in somewhat cooler air for Thursday. Another cold front arrives late Friday night and this one may feature some shower activity for the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor; however, temperatures will not change much at all this weekend following its passage.

Looking ahead, there is a third cold front destined to arrive on Sunday night and this one means business. It is at the leading edge of an Arctic-originated air mass and the early part of next week will feature the coldest weather so far this season and likely the first hard freeze for many areas.

**An impressive cold air mass with its origins over the Arctic reaches the eastern states early next week...snow on the table Great Lakes/interior NE US/New England**

Paul Dorian

There will be as many as three cold fronts to deal with in the northeastern part of the nation during the next week or so, but the third system will be the most important and is destined to arrive late in the upcoming weekend. The first cold front comes through on Wednesday night primarily on the dry side and it turns slightly cooler behind it on Thursday. The second cold front then arrives at the end of the work week likely producing some shower activity from late Friday night into early Saturday; however, temperatures will hardly change at all this weekend following its passage. It is the third cold front that arrives on Sunday night that will be very noticeable as it is at the leading edge of an Arctic air mass…the coldest air so far this season. This cold air outbreak early next week may be accompanied by some early season accumulating snow across the Great Lakes, interior sections of the Northeast US and New England.

6:00 AM | *Low pressure pushes off the Carolina coast today with a couple of showers possible around here*

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will push off the Carolina coast today and it looks like its precipitation field will extend north and west to the I-95 corridor. As a result, clouds will be plentiful through early afternoon and there can be a couple of showers in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor…some clearing late in the day. High pressure is in control for the next couple of days and then one cold front crosses the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday night and a second one on Friday night.

6:00 AM | **Howling winds for our Halloween Day with gusts to 50 mph...dry, cool weekend...turn the clocks back an hour early Sunday**

Paul Dorian

The powerful storm system that brought heavy rain and strong winds to the area on Thursday has pushed off to our northeast and there should be some sunshine today in its wake today. But the bigger story will be the howling winds on our Halloween Day which can gust to 50 mph from a west-to-northwest direction…power outages are on the table. A very tight pressure gradient is now developing between the powerful departing storm system and an incoming high pressure system over the Northern Plains. High pressure will be in control of the weather this weekend resulting in cool, dry conditions, but winds will still be somewhat of a factor on Saturday.

One final note...it is time once again to turn the clocks back an hour...early Sunday morning.

6:00 AM | **Powerful storm bring heavy rain, strong winds today and a possible strong-to-severe thunderstorm...very windy conditions to follow on Halloween Day (Friday) with gusts to 45 mph**

Paul Dorian

A powerful storm system will produce strong winds in the Mid-Atlantic region and periods of rain today which will be heavy at times…there can be a strong-to-severe thunderstorm as well. The rain tapers off to isolated showers by later tonight, but the strong winds will continue as the storm system pushes off to the northeast of here. Winds remain very strong on Friday (Halloween Day) with gusts to 45 mph to go along with sunshine and cool conditions. The weekend will be dry and cool with sunshine on both days and afternoon highs likely in the mid-to-upper 50’s.

6:00 AM | **Strong storm system to bring a soaking rain to the Mid-Atlantic region...a windy Halloween Day**

Paul Dorian

An active weather pattern is setting up over the continental US featuring a deepening upper-level trough over the Tennessee Valley. This deepening low in the upper atmosphere will help to spawn a strong low pressure system at the surface-level which will then move in a northeasterly direction resulting in a soaking event for much of the Mid-Atlantic region from later today into Thursday evening…1-3 inches on the table. The rain may linger for a bit on Friday morning in the northern Mid-Atlantic region, but the bulk of the day on Friday (Halloween Day) should feature cool and very windy conditions with gusts possible to 40 mph or so to go along with partly sunny skies. The weekend is looking dry and cool with sunshine on both days and highs likely in the mid-to-upper 50’s.

***”Category 5” Hurricane Melissa reaches Jamaica with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph...to next pass over eastern Cuba, southeastern Bahamas, and then to Bermuda later this week***

Paul Dorian

Hurricane Melissa has reached the southwestern coast of Jamaica as a category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph. The hurricane has turned to the northeast and should continue on this path during the next few days with an accelerated motion. After hitting Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa will cross over eastern Cuba – likely as a major hurricane – and then to the southeastern part of the Bahama Island chain in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.  By late Thursday, Melissa could come very close to the island of Bermuda or move directly over as it picks up some forward speed and continues on a northeasterly direction...eventually bringing it out to the open waters of the North Atlantic by the upcoming weekend.

6:00 AM | **Melissa nearing Jamaica as a "cat 5"...soaking rain event on the way for the Mid-Atlantic from later tomorrow into Thursday night...cool and windy on Halloween Day with gusts to 40 mph**

Paul Dorian

Hurricane Melissa is nearing the island of Jamaica this morning as a category 5 storm (175 mph maximum sustained winds) and will produce as much as 30-50 inches of rain when all is said and done. The hurricane has turned from a westerly to a northeasterly direction in recent hours and it will begin to accelerate during the next couple of days. As such, Melissa is likely to cross over eastern Cuba later tonight - as a major hurricane - and then over the southeastern Bahama Islands on Wednesday. By later Thursday, Melissa is likely to move over or very close to the island of Bermuda - likely still as a hurricane - and then wind up over the open waters of the North Atlantic by the weekend.

Meanwhile, an active weather pattern is setting up over the continental US featuring a deepening upper-level trough over the Tennessee Valley. This strong low aloft will help to spawn a strong low pressure system at surface-level on Wednesday which will then move in a northeasterly direction resulting in a soaking event for much of the Mid-Atlantic region from later tomorrow into Thursday night…1-3 inches on the table. The rain may linger for a bit on Friday morning in the northern Mid-Atlantic region, but the bulk of the day on Friday (Halloween Day) should feature cool and very windy conditions with gusts to 40 mph or so to go along with partly sunny skies. The weekend is looking dry and cool from this vantage point.

***"Cat 5" Hurricane Melissa nearing Jamaica...headed to eastern Cuba, southeast Bahamas...soaking rainfall on the way to the Mid-Atlantic from separate storm system...windy, cool for Halloween Day***

Paul Dorian

Melissa is now a category 5 “major” hurricane located just to the south of Jamaica and continues to drift to the west over some very warm water of the central Caribbean Sea. Hurricane Melissa will begin a gradual turn to the northwest and then north by later tonight and likely come ashore on Jamaica’s southern coast on Tuesday morning. After that, the hurricane will push in a northeasterly direction and pass over the eastern part of Cuba by early Wednesday – likely still as a major - and then likely the southeastern Bahama Islands by late Wednesday. By later Thursday, Melissa could come very close to the island of Bermuda as it picks up some forward speed and continues on a northeasterly direction...eventually bringing it out to the open waters of the North Atlantic.

Meanwhile, an active weather pattern over the continental US will feature a deepening upper-level trough by mid-week over the Tennessee Valley and this will help to spawn a strong surface-level storm system. This strong storm will likely produce a soaking event for the Mid-Atlantic region from later Wednesday through Thursday night with 2+ inches on the table, and onshore winds will be a noticeable factor as well. The rain may linger for a bit on Friday morning, but the bulk of Halloween Day should feature partial sunshine and quite windy and cool conditions.

7:00 AM | **Soaking rain event likely late Wednesday/Thursday...windy, cool Halloween Day (Friday)**

Paul Dorian

An area of high pressure to our north remains in control of the weather around here as we begin the new work week with today featuring cool conditions and a mix of sun and clouds. An active weather pattern will bring one storm system to the Carolinas from later tonight into Tuesday and its effects will generally stay to our south; however, a couple of showers cannot be ruled out later Tuesday night and early Wednesday. A second storm will then push northeast from the Tennessee Valley from later Wednesday into Thursday and it’ll likely produce a soaking rainfall in the Mid-Atlantic region and the threat of rain can linger into early Friday. The rest of the day on Friday (Halloween Day) should feature windy and cool conditions and a return to partly sunny skies.
